Water States - Tamil Nadu Alternative ways to reuse water Our Bureau Coimbatore, Feb. 21 Industrial water consumption in the country at present stands at about 40 billion cubic metre or 8 per cent of the total freshwater available and is estimated to double in the next two decades, due to globalisation and increasing economic activity, according to Ms Nandini Rangaswamy, Chairperson of CII-Tamil Nadu’s Taskforce on Water. With supplies becoming scarce and expensive, industries and utilities should find alternative ways of reusing water to reduce their total water demand, she said at a seminar on industrial water conservation, organised by the CII, Coimbatore, here on Wednesday. She suggested that treated municipal wastewater could be a supplemental supply for industrial or irrigation applications. With most parts of Tamil Nadu coming under the rain-shadow region, over exploitation and drought conditions had reduced the per capita availability of fresh water in the State to 840 cubic metre, far below the national average of 1,200 cubic metre and below the 1,000 cubic metre level fixed as the international measure to denote ‘water scarcity’, Ms Rangaswamy said. RecyclingShe said municipalities and industries should incorporate water reuse in their new plant design wherever possible, as implementing recycling in the initial stage of plant operation would be more economical than retrofitting for reuse at a later date. Mr R. Venkatachalam, Chairman of the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation — who inaugurated the seminar — said Coimbatore, billed as the next key industrial zone after Chennai, is witness to rapid industrialisation that casts heavy burden on its urban infrastructure management, including drinking water and sanitation systems.
