Trade & Labour Unions Strike call: Govt to hold talks with bank unions today K.R. Srivats New Delhi, Feb. 18 In a move to placate the bank employees, who have decided to go on strike on February 25 and 26, the Finance Ministry has convened a meeting with the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) here on Tuesday to discuss the issues behind the strike call. The meeting assumes significance as normally it is the Labour Ministry that is involved in the conciliatory talks with the bank unions. Sources said that the meeting has been convened by the Department of Financial Services in the Finance Ministry. Mr Arun Ramanathan, Secretary, Financial Sector, is expected to hold talks with the representatives of the nine unions forming part of the UFBU. Bank employees had observed a day-long strike on January 25 following failure of conciliatory talks with the Labour Ministry on their demands on mergers, pension and compassionate appointments. “We will go with an open mind to the meeting. If any satisfactory solution emerges on our demands on merger, pension and compassionate appointments, we will certainly take a re-look at our strike call decision,” sources in the bank unions said. UFBU has already sent in the strike notice to the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the Labour Ministry. It may be recalled that the IBA representative had, at the conciliatory talks held in January, made it clear that it could not agree to the unions’ demands that they be given another opportunity to opt for pension as against provident fund.
