Two/Three Wheelers Corporate - Corporate Disputes Marketing - IPR TVS may have a stand-by engine for Flame
Our Bureau
Chennai, Feb. 16 Sources among the auto components suppliers have a suspicion that TVS Motors may have a second engine ready for Flame. This ‘Plan B’ should enable the motorcycle manufacturer to still launch the vehicle, they say. Given the sensitivity of the issue, no source was willing to be quoted but it is clear that many believe that the Flame would still hit the market. TVS Motors stonewalled all questions regarding the issue on Saturday. Otherwise, the vendors and dealers are not disappointed over the issue much. The case is still open, for TVS Motors may approach the Supreme Court. The worst-case scenario could be that the Rs 50-crore expenditure on development of the product may go waste. Vendors may suffer some loss of business. ‘Failed’ product? The scenario now is not much different than a product not taking off. TVS, like other manufacturers, has had its share of failed products, such as the scooter Spectra and the motorbike Centra. The mood is slightly different among the dealer community. Several dealers told Business Line (on condition of anonymity) that Saturday’s verdict would turn into an image issue for TVS Motors. Already, TVS Motors’ sales have been sagging over the last few months. In the third quarter of the current year, motorcycle sales were 25 per cent lower at 1,76,158 units compared with 2,19,963 units in the corresponding quarter of last year. Saturday’s verdict is not going to help matters, some dealers felt. More Stories on : Two/Three Wheelers | Corporate Disputes | IPR | Courts/Legal Issues
