Tea producers earn Rs 12 crore less at Coonoor

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Feb. 15 Producers who sold their teas through the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) earned Rs 12.06 crore less in 2007 compared with 2006. Though the volume sold rose marginally, the price realisation was lower.

Overall Earnings

Prices averaged Rs 44.19 a kg compared with Rs 47.77 in 2006. This resulted in higher volume of 37.73 million kg from 37.39 million kg. Consequently, the overall earnings fell to Rs 166.6 crore from Rs 178.66 crore, marking a decline of 6.75 per cent.

Average prices dropped despite an increase in respect of orthodox teas because CTC teas lost heavily. Each kilogram of CTC tea fetched Rs 4 lower to average Rs 43.26. Because of the drop, the volume sold rose marginally to 34.80 million kg from 34.66 million kg.
