Industry & Economy - Double Taxation Treaties
Indo-Mauritius DTAA: India seeks further negotiations

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi, Feb. 15 India plans to go in for further negotiations with Mauritius for revising the double tax avoidance treaty (DTAA) between the two countries.

Official sources said that the matter has not ended and that there will be further negotiations towards revising the treaty. Five rounds of negotiations have been completed. The Indo-Mauritius DTAA came into force in 1984.

With the changed economic environment and increased FDI flows from sources other than Mauritius, India is keen to tax the capital gains arising from investments made in India through the Mauritius route, sources added.

“We have to take decisions based on mutual consent. Both sides have to agree and only then can there be a move forward. But we are keen to bring in amendments,” sources said.

The CBDT Chairman, Mr R. Prasad, had recently visited Mauritius for talks on the DTAA.
