Letters Petrol price hike This is with reference to “Petrol price goes up by Rs 2, diesel Re 1” (Business Line, February 15). Though the increase may be marginal and in the right direction, it is an indication that government is prepared to take strong decisions despite opposition from the Left and the BJP. If the BJP and the Left think that the hike is perhaps to gain political advantage, how far it would help, depends on the other actions and policies adopted by the government to give the people a better living. A. Jacob Sahayam Thiruvananthapuram * * * The agitation planned by the Left parties and the main Opposition BJP against the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel (by Rs 2 and Re 1 respectively) announced by the Centre is unnecessary, to say the least. People who use two-wheelers and the four-wheelers have the necessary wherewithal to foot the small rise in the fuel bill. When we pay a large chunk of our income as tax (income-tax) without grumbling, we can easily bear the small hike in petrol and diesel prices in the interest of the economy. The parties’ concern for the farmers, that the latter section of would be worst hit by this hike, is superficial, as even otherwise they are suffering far more serious problems and are anyway far from happy.
