Hyderabad, Feb. 8

In a major boost to bio-diesel plantation in Andhra Pradesh, the State Government has decided to enable pongamia plantation in two lakh acres this year.

The decision has been taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister, here on Friday.

In order to encourage farmers, the Government has announced that the minimum support price of Rs 10 a kg of seed would further be enhanced, if need be. “We will discuss with the stakeholders at a later stage to hike the MSP,” the Chief Minister said.

The State has already written to the bankers, asking them to support the bio-diesel sector and open savings bank account for the farmers. The Chief Minister has directed the officials to ensure plantation of pongamia only in waste lands. “This is to avoid food security problem,” a Government release said here.

The plantation has been taken up mainly in the backward districts like Anantapur, Adilabad, Kadapa and Mahaboobnagar.
