Indonesian province seeks funds in agri processing sector
Our Bureau
Mangalore, Feb. 8 There is good scope for investments in agriculture processing industries in Banda Aceh in Indonesia, according to the Vice-Governor of the province, Mr Muhammad Nazar.
Addressing the members of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Thursday, Mr Nazar said that the Banda Aceh province grows various agricultural commodities such as coffee, rubber and rice.
Palm oil and fisheries sectors also have presence in the province. But the region requires good processing infrastructure for these commodities. Indian investors can look into that area, he said.
Though the region is one of the major producers of timbers, it has now stopped its production due to environmental reason. There is a moratorium on its logging.
Mr Graham Harris, a representative from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), who accompanied Mr Nazar, said that IFC is helping Aceh on a long-term basis.
Thriving
Banda Aceh, which faced the fury of tsunami two years ago, is thriving now. In the last 12 months, the focus has changed from emergency relief measures to sustainable economic development, he added.
Mr Madhusudan Rao, Managing Director of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Processing and Marketing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd, said that they would be interested in importing cocoa beans from the region.
