Events States - Tamil Nadu ‘Communication skills vital for jobs’
Plain speak: Dr. S. Ramanathan, Professor and Director, School of Management Studies, Anna University, Coimbatore, at a BL Club meeting at the Department of Management Studies of Tamilnadu College of Engineering, Karumathampatti. Our Bureau Coimbatore, Feb. 8 There are plenty of job opportunities available now and the problem is that many people lack in communication skills despite being highly knowledgeable, according to Dr. S. Ramanathan, Professor and Director, School of Management Studies, Anna University, Coimbatore. Inaugurating the Business Line Club at the Department of Management Studies of Tamilnadu College of Engineering, Karumathampatti near Coimbatore, he said that if people were not able to express themselves well, they would be nowhere in spite of their knowledge. Similarly, mere communication skills alone would be insufficient since they could be exposed within a few minutes during an interview if they did not possess depth of knowledge. While companies could teach technical skills, they could not teach communication skills. With a large number of job seekers in the market, if students do not show that they are distinct or innovative, they do not stand a chance. Speaking on ‘Nonverbal communication: the unspoken dialogue’, he said making a positive first impression was important to make communication easier and comfortable. Indirectly referring to how the former President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Reliance group founder the late Dhirubai Ambani, and actor Rajnikanth,he exhorted the students to have a goal and dream and be focused. Accent, firm handshake, good hygiene etc were some of the prerequisites to make a good first impression. Dr Ramanathan said while going for an interview, students should have adequate knowledge about the company and the industry. Watching TV programmes, listening to radio and reading newspapers would help in increasing knowledge. Body language was important and projecting a powerful image was necessary. Dr K.A. Palaniswamy, College Principal, Mr D. Rajkumar, Assistant Regional General Manager (Circulation), The Hindu, Coimbatore, and Dr A. Ramachandran, Director, Department of Management Studies of the college were present at the meeting. More Stories on : Events | Human Resources | Tamil Nadu
