Give back lands to the displaced, urges CITU

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Feb. 7

The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant management should consider giving back lands to the displaced persons, as it is not in a position to give them jobs, even in the expansion phase, according to the district unit of the CITU.

At a press meet here on Thursday, Mr Ch. Narasinga Rao, CITU leader and the district president of the CPM, said that more than 6,000 people are waiting for the steel plant management to accommodate them. “They are not even being given contract jobs, even though they were given R (rehabilitation) cards and promised jobs at the time of the construction of the plant.”

‘Give it back’

A huge chunk of land (as much 22,000 acres) was acquired in the eighties at the time of the construction of the plant and “now it is clear that so much land is not required for the plant even after expansion. The plant should think of giving back the lands to the displaced, to the extent of one acre or so for each displaced family”.

He alleged that politicians of different parties were having designs on the excess land with the VSP and “therefore the plant management should make it clear at this juncture whether or not it can give permanent jobs to the displaced. If the management cannot do so, there is absolutely no justification for robbing the displaced persons of their most precious possession – land.”

Mr Y. Lakshmana Rao, President of the Displaced Persons’ Association, also reiterated the demand.
