Climate & Weather Tropical moisture aims to target peninsula Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Feb. 6 Tropical moisture draining from the eastern seas is forecast to slosh around Sri Lanka and the adjoining southern Indian peninsula, blowing up as occasional rain events from the weekend. La Nina-fired waves from the western Pacific will transport the moisture over land into the sub-continent, the wet session from which would be felt over Sri Lanka and along the southeast coast of India. MOISTURE FLUXModel forecasts suggest that the train of events will be triggered from Saturday, when the prevailing weather-maker western disturbance leaves the northwest of the country. The moisture flux from around the south could last for a week, according to these models. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated rain or thundershowers are likely over south Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the next few days. Developments on the weather front along the Pak-Afghan border still suggests the building of a high-pressure zone (ridge, with cold and sinking air) once the prevailing western disturbance passes to the east. This will restrict the movement of western disturbances for sometime, instead setting off cold waves and dry winter conditions in the north and northwest. MERCURY TO FALLThe IMD has already forecast a fall in minimum temperatures from Saturday over northwest and adjoining central India. Meanwhile, western Himalayan region experienced fairly widespread moderate snowfall under the influence of the disturbance. Isolated rain or thundershowers also occurred over plains of northwest India. The ongoing precipitation over northwest India is likely to continue for two more days. Isolated heavy snowfall is also likely over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh till Thursday. Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over Punjab, north Haryana and Chandigarh until Thursday and isolated thereafter. More Stories on : Climate & Weather
