Outlook Agri-Biz & Commodities - Floriculture States - Tamil Nadu Tanflora to expand, diversify R. Balaji Hosur, Feb. 3 Tanflora Infrastructure Park Ltd, an agri export zone for roses, plans to expand and diversify operations. Mr Najeeb Ahmed, Managing Director, Tanflora, told reporters he had invited to the company’s facility that the Tamil Nadu Government is considering allotting an additional 40 ha to expand Tanflora’s operations. Tanflora plans to set up a plant propagation facility to produce one million rose plants for exports and the domestic market and a unit with a capacity to make about 30,000 bouquets a day to supply directly to international retail chains. The company, a joint venture between the state-run Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and M. Naseem Ahmed & Associates of Bangalore, holding an equal stake, provides common infrastructure, processing facility and international marketing to over 25 growers within the park. Tanflora’s exports to meet Valentine’s Day demand has trebled to three million rose stems compared to last year. The annual production was now about 30 million roses under 36 hectares of green house. The area under cultivation would reach its full capacity of 54 ha with a production of 70 million rose stems by next year. Tanflora is spread over 100 ha with the rest of the area taken up for common infrastructure facilities. Each rose grower is allotted two hectares for cultivation of export variety roses and the growers hand over the produce to Tanflora for post-harvest processing, packing and export marketing. The revenue is shared 25:75 on f.o.b. basis between Tanflora and the growers. In addition, Tanflora directly cultivates roses on a 4 ha area. The AEZ also supports over 200 farmers in Hosur and surrounding areas, a major production centre for export varieties of flowers, with the processing and export facilities. Mr Ahmed said Tanflora’s produce goes to the US, Europe, Japan, Australia, West Asian and Far East countries. The company has overseas offices and soon expects to set up one in Tokyo. Next week, a delegation of buyers from Japan is expected at the facility to finalise a long-term marketing arrangement, Mr Ahmed said. Tanflora is now world’s fourth largest producer of export quality roses. More Stories on : Outlook | Floriculture | Tamil Nadu
