Modernisation Hyderabad’s new airport: Flight tests by mid-Feb K.V. Kurmanath Hyderabad, Feb 1 After clearing the crucial calibration tests, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RJIA), promoted by the GMR group, is bracing up for trials in mid-February. “Results of the calibration tests were positive. These include checking of relevant equipment on the aircraft and its corresponding linking equipment on the ground that completes the communication in all aspects,” a senior official of Andhra Pradesh Government told Business Line. GMR’s stakeThe Andhra Pradesh Government and Airports Authority of India (AAI) own 13 per cent stake each in the Rs 2,478-crore airport coming up at Shamshabad near here. The GMR group holds 63 per cent. Works on the airport site are almost complete as the launch date is just six weeks away. ActivitiesThe tests also included checking navigation systems. Though GMR Hyderabad International Airport owns and runs the airport, it is the AAI that takes care of Air Traffic Control activity. Setting up the tower and installing the necessary equipment too were done by the AAI. Now that the calibration tests were over, the airport is preparing itself for the trials runs at the airport. “The trial runs are likely to begin mid-February,” the official said.
