Ahead of the SAFTA ministerial, India plans to formally announce a set of next steps it intends to take to deal with non-tariff barriers (NTBs) so as to enhance trade flows within the SAARC region.

“We would like to go to SAFTA ministerial with a positive frame of mind. A formal announcement will be made well in time of the ministerial on how we plan to deal with NTBs”, Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Commerce, told Business Line.

He said that the next SAFTA ministerial will be held in New Delhi from March 1 to 3. Indications are that India would put in place a mechanism, whereby, laboratories of other countries could be registered and accredited here. This could help in expediting the process of certification of goods, Mr Ramesh said.

India is also likely to go in for better documentation of procedures that appear to be non-transparent and complicated. “We will come up with manuals to ensure greater transparency in procedures”, Mr Ramesh said.
