Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Punjab, Haryana may receive rainfall
Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 3 Contours of what could in all probability be a ‘pincer-like’ approach of the wet climes about to buffet Jammu and Kashmir and the adjoining northwest border are becoming increasingly clear. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said a western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region from Friday onwards. Isolated rain/snow is likely over Jammu and Kashmir and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from Saturday. RAINS FOR PUNJABSignificantly, it adds that rain/thundershowers are likely over Punjab and the adjoining plains of northwest India from Saturday onwards, endorsing forecasts to this effect made available already by other international weather models. Satellite maps already reveal white (and therefore cold) cloud tops surrounding the northern and western precincts of the northwestern border and Jammu and Kashmir. The westerly trough is likely to throw up an induced ‘low’ over the top, which should liven up the rain session thanks to moisture feed from the Arabian Sea to the southwest. DEEPER TROUGHMedium range forecasts say this system would be followed up by a deep westerly trough, which would start enveloping the northwest region early next week. This would be more like the bellwether westerly systems with large-amplitude known to frequent the northwest triggering rain and sleet, but markedly absent, thus, far during the season. Under the influence of this system, the hilly regions of northwest, viz. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal, are expected to receive scattered to fairly widespread snowfall/rainfall for three days from Monday.
