River under threat

– K.K. Mustafah

A view of the Periyar river at Aluva. The increasing number of high-rise buildings on its banks has narrowed the river considerably. More than 20 private groups and real estate developers have announced “river view” building projects. Some projects have violated provisions of the Kerala River Protection Act that prohibits construction activities within 50 metres of the river bank. Illegal occupation of the river banks is rampant on the stretch from Vandiperiyar to Kadamkudy panchayat area and from Idukki dam to Karimbam, according to the State Pollution Control Board’s studies.
