Our Bureau

Mumbai, Dec 13 The fifth China Products (Mumbai India) Exhibition kicked off today with participation by 150 Chinese companies looking for business alliances with Indian companies.

Mr Suresh Shetty, Minister for Tourism, Maharashtra on the occasion said that while the target for the bilateral trade between India and China was $20 billion by 2008, they would be crossing $30 billion by end of 2007 itself.

“With the slowdown in the US economy, China is aggressively pursuing partnerships and business plans with India as the two countries are expected to dominate the world trade in the years to come,” the minister said.

On the influx of Chinese goods entering the country being a threat to domestic manufacturers, he said, “We want more Chinese goods to come here, so Indian manufacturers can learn from them.” On the question of the quality of Chinese products, he said, “If you want cheap products, they will be low priced, if you want good quality goods, you will have to pay for it. China gives a wide range of options based on the quality of product you want.”

A diverse product portfolio ranging from air compressors, building, construction and interiors, cosmetic and beauty products, diesel engine to electrical appliances will be on display at the three day exposition, which is promoted by All India Association of Industries, India-China Chamber of Commerce and Industries and the Indian Merchants Chamber along with Worldex India.

Last year, the exhibition saw participation by 40,000 visitors with business deals worth Rs 70 crore resulting from it, according to a release.
