Off-shore Development
V. Rishi Kumar Hyderabad, Dec. 13 IT services provider Satyam Computer Services Ltd is on a rapid expansion mode into non-English speaking geographies of China, Malaysia and Brazil in particular which require multi-lingual capabilities. The company is forging local academic partnerships to groom talent to meet the country’s business requirements. This is part of its strategy to take jobs to locations where there is talent, according to Mr Rajul Asthana, Head of Satyam Learning Centre. “The growth in new markets does not mean lesser induction in India. The business momentum is such that we expect to recruit talent irrespective of where they are located in, both in India and all these markets” Mr Asthana told Business Line. Tech campusSatyam is creating technology campuses in Malaysia and China and expects to step up headcount in Malaysia to about 2,000 in the near term and about 5,000 by 2011. Already, it has built up significant presence in China and continues to recruit local talent from top engineering colleges, he said. Markets such as China, Malaysia, Brazil and South Africa come with different set of challenges for technology companies expanding their base. Apart from imparting training in technology, they require to be groomed in multi-lingual capabilities and cross cultural issues. For instance in Malaysia, Satyam has signed up with Multimedia Development Corporation wherein it partners with universities in aligning academia to industry needs empowering them to churn out business-ready graduates. This is complemented by faculty development programmes. “Typically, over 60 per cent of the recruits in these markets are fresh graduates, who require fine-tuning. By creating a campus and virtual learning capabilities, we are able to address the issue of grooming local talent better,” Mr Asthana said. INTERACTIVE LEARNINGThis is complemented by interactive learning platform created by the company using SumTotal Learning Management System. This platform goes beyond learning as it has been integrated with other technology capabilities and serves as Wikipedia having Amazon like features and different work flow. Referring to growth in China, Mr Asthana said the company is present in several locations and has about 800 people which is poised to increase to about 2,000 with the addition of a campus in Nanjing, where a 2,500-seater facility is coming up.
