Nasscom moots best practices for cos to retain women talent

Bangalore, Dec. 13 Nearly 70 per cent women in the IT/ITeS sector in the country feel that attrition among them was not due to their incapability or incompetence at work, indicating that there were personal issues involved.

A joint study by Nasscom and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, on women in the IT/ITeS sector looked into factors inhibiting women’s advancement to senior management positions and suggested some best practices to retain the women workforce in profession.

The report was presented today at the IT Nasscom Women’s Leadership Summit in Bangalore.

Support system

Nearly 52 per cent are of the view that organisations need to provide a stronger support system to women compared to men.

The sample profile comprised BPO 12 per cent, IT entry level 42 per cent, senior level 10 per cent and mid level 36 per cent.

Career development

About 40 per cent of the mid-level women in the sector feel that their male colleagues were not gender sensitive and 50 per cent of their senior colleagues felt that there was a need for career and counselling development and women’s networks.

The study also suggests some best practices that companies could adopt: notable being sabbatical, teleworking policy and the option to work in day shifts.
