M. Somasekhar

Hyderabad, Dec. 4 Ansaldo Caldaie Boilers is setting up a boiler manufacturing unit in Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, with an overall investment of up to $20 million.

The Indian company of the Italian power major Ansaldo Caldaie, has already acquired land, about 25 km from the Tuticorin Port. It expects to commence work around March 2008.

According to Mr Carloalberto Longoni, Chief Operation Officer of the Indian company, the manufacturing unit is targeted to meet the demands of the Indian market initially and later the Asian markets.

The $20 million investment would be made in two phases. In the second phase, it expects to start worldwide exports from the plant. At present, the Italian major has a small manufacturing unit in China for packaged boilers.

The company based in Chennai has a portfolio of Rs 600 crore worth contracts for the supply of boilers and components to major Indian power utilities, independent power producers and also the State Electricity Boards, Mr Longoni told Business Line here.

He said the company was also partnering with Skoda Power, the Czech power major, to supply the entire ‘power block’, which consists of the steam turbine, boiler and all the equipment and components that go into setting up the main power generating unit, for the Indian market.
