Inflation: `Monetary steps helped'

New Delhi, Nov. 3

The Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, has said that the country's Wholesale Price Indexbased inflation had moderated due to the steps taken on the monetary side, even as he noted that a close watch on inflation would continue. "Inflation is down because of the monetary steps we (the central bank) have taken. We will continue to keep a close watch on inflation," Mr Chidambaram told reporters here on Friday. The headline inflation rate for the week ended October 20 touched a five-year low of 3.02 per cent compared with 3.07 per cent a week earlier, data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry here showed. - Our Bureau
