Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct. 30 The US-based University of Utah has signed four collaborations with Indian companies in the area of healthcare. They include Dr Naresh Trehan’s MediCity, Manipal AcuNova, Pregna International and the offshore healthcare service provider, Globerian.

With Mumbai-based Pregna, the university is hopeful of commercialising an anti-HIV delivery product, a molecular condom that protects against AIDS, which should reach markets both in India and South Africa in a few years’ time.

Dr Jack Brittain, Vice-President Technology Venture Development, University of Utah, said that the device was invented by Ms Kavita Madanlal Gupta, an Indian bioengineering student pursuing her PhD studies and developed under the university’s student invention programme. The product is now undergoing clinical trials in Belgium.

Utah Governor, Mr Jon Huntsman, who is heading a delegation from the American state was there on the occasion when the MoU with Global Health Private Ltd’s MediCity, and Naveen Trehan-headed Globerian were signed. While the latter will be working with the university in the medical informatics area and advanced health information research and data management technologies, with MediCity the collaboration will be in the areas of medical research. “At MediCity, we are building infrastructure to make the place a major destination for clinical trials, device development and other medical research,” said Dr Naresh Trehan.
