AP Govt moves to strengthen education system

CM hints at public-pvt partnership for schools

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Oct. 30 The Andhra Pradesh Government plans to step up focus and investments in shoring up the education sector with public-private partnership.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today said that the State plans to adopt ‘saturation concept’ that is aimed at broad-basing the education system covering both residential and non-residential schools.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the district collectors’ conference here today, Dr Reddy said a perspective plan has been drawn up to upgrade about 700-odd residential schools managed by Government for weaker sections, with buildings and their infrastructure and about 5,000 non-residential schools. All these would be trained to offer quality education.

Dr Reddy said that the State was launching rural residential public schools through public-private partnerships. Each of this will be on a 10-acre site at an investment of Rs 10 crore.

The Government expects estimated total investment of Rs 1,695 crore and is of the opinion that this would not be a burden on the State exchequer as this would be spread over some years. Initially, Rs 400 crore has been provided for the project.

The Chief Minister said that the Government would like to encourage the option of English medium as it is very important to groom students. Shortly, 60-70 private entrepreneurs would be encouraged to take these school ventures.

DELAY

Earlier, the Chief Minister ordered an inquiry into delay in implementing his order providing for higher compensation to those whose lands have been acquired.

The Chief Minister complimented the collectors for their efforts in implementing the Indiramma housing programme and directed them to complete at least 80 per cent of the targeted houses by March 2009. Dr Reddy announced the appointment of a Group of Ministers headed by the Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, to review the progress of the programme.
