Sensex ends flat in see-saw trade on weak Asian cues

Mumbai, Oct 16 After breaching the 19,000 landmark, the BSE benchmark Sensex ended almost flat on Tuesday.

The market witnessed high volatility with the Sensex hitting an intra-day low of 18,777.75 and intra-day high of 19,174.45, ending the day at 19051.86.

The NSE Nifty also fell by 0.04 per cent and closed at 5,668.05.

Both FIIs and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net sellers today.

FIIs were net sellers to the tune of Rs 234.32 crore, and DIIs were net sellers to the tune of Rs 10.05 crore according to the NSE data.

“The Asian markets were slightly weak, thus giving out weak cues to the local markets,” said Ms Anita Gandhi, Head of Institutional Business, Arihant Capital Markets Ltd.

Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.77 per cent, Nikkei 225 fell 1.27 per cent, whereas Nasdaq composite fell 0.91 per cent.

BSE-Bankex was up 2.75 per cent, BSE-CD 1.20 per cent, BSE-HC 0.31 per cent, BSE Realty was by 1.10 per cent, while all other indices ended in the red today.

Major gainers included ICICI Bank, which rose 5.48 per cent, Hindalco (4.55 per cent), Reliance Energy (3.09 per cent) and NTPC (1.96 per cent).The stocks which fell in value were Infosys Technologies dipping 3.14 per cent, Hindustan Unilever (3.08 per cent), M&M (2.34 per cent) and L&T (2.02 per cent).

“There might be profit-booking on FII counters as we cannot expect them to be net buyers all the time,” said a official from a Mumbai-based brokerage firm.

Marketmen said that markets were flat and did not react to the news of the Reliance Natural Resources Ltd ruling by the Bombay High Court, as it will be a matter to be decided internally by both parties. RNRL fell 0.31 per cent and closed at Rs 95.75.
