Forex Industry & Economy - Tourism ‘Re appreciation a boon for outbound tourism’ Shubhra Tandon Mumbai, Sept. 21 The outbound tourism sector could be buoyant in the coming days as the rupee has appreciated further against the dollar. According to travel industry experts, this could generate a positive sentiment among people travelling to all destinations, especially the US. Mr Vishal Suri, COO of Thomas Cook India, told Business Line: “The overall sentiment is going to be positive for all markets, be it the US, Far East or Europe, as most destinations have dollar as a common currency for conversions.” He added: “Though no immediate effect is seen in travel packages, it will give Indians the freedom to spend more while travelling.” Mr Frederick Divecha, Senior Vice-President (Marketing), SOTC, said: “People would find it to be a good time to plan a holiday to the US.” However, the segment that can rejoice the most is the one comprising students planning for foreign studies. “I will now be paying less for my education in countries like the US, and also save after paying my education loan in India,” said Ms Neeta Mehra, who is planning to pursue a management course in the US. “If I’m funding my education with Indian rupees and earning in dollars abroad, that would help me save quite some even after repaying my loan.” Mr Divecha said: “Foreign studies are going to be cheaper now. There could be an increase in the number of Indian students willing to pursue courses abroad.” Cox & Kings India, however, is maintaining a wait-and-watch approach. “It is too early to comment on the rupee appreciation. One must wait and see what impact it will have on travelling trends,” said Mr Arup Sen, Executive Director. More Stories on : Forex | Tourism | International Travel
