Talks fail to resolve Bajaj Akurdi dispute

Our Bureau

Pune, Sept. 19 The stand-off between workers and management of Bajaj Auto Ltd over the closure Akurdi plant continues as talks today failed to produce any results. The management has called for a second round of talks at a date fixed by the workers to find a resolution.

Mr C.P. Tripathi, Vice-President, Corporate, BAL, called it a “positive meeting”, clarifying that representatives of the two unions had been told clearly that the company was unable to provide them work or resume production. “But we have to find a way out, though neither of us know at the moment what the way out is,” he said. The management was represented by senior officials, including Mr S. Menghane, General Manager, works, Mr P.S. Gadkari, DGM corporate, and Mr Tripathi.

The workers, in the meantime, are continuing their peaceful agitation outside the BAL gates and said they will seek a democratic solution to the issue before seeking legal recourse like approaching the industrial court.

It may be recalled that BAL had ceased production of two-wheelers at Akurdi with from September 1, 2007, saying taxes and government policy had rendered production here unviable.
