Rain surplus builds up; deficit in northwest

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 14

The rain surplus has begun consolidating once again with all-India area weighted precipitation recording +3 per cent as on September 12 (+2 per cent till the previous week) even as rainfall deficits became entrenched at some places in the northwest.

Renewed activity in the Bay of Bengal and expected rub-off impact on the Arabian Sea flows would bring more rain to the varyingly drenched central India and the southern peninsula. But the northwest would be largely left out, unless the odd western disturbance conjures up an unlikely magic.

SILVER LINING

The only silver lining is the presence of the foothills-bound monsoon trough that may trigger varied spells in the hills, helping fill the canals irrigating the adjoining plains. These westerlies have largely steered clear of the region, thus, clearing up the skies in the process.

Uttar Pradesh as a whole has now slipped into the deficient category, with a dry spell during the week just past undermining the case of the `precariously normal' Met sub-division of east Uttar Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh too, suffered further setback, while there was slight (relatively speaking) improvement in the rest of the Met sub-divisions in the region.

NOT TOO STRONG

The only `deficient' Met sub-division that has some chance of benefiting from a `low' persisting from overnight in the Bay of Bengal is east Madhya Pradesh. But the system strength fails to inspire confidence, according to weather watchers.

On Friday, the `low' was located over the coastal areas of West Bengal and north Orissa. Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely over north Orissa and Gangetic West Bengal during the next two days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), model predictions suggested scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity for south peninsular India and the North-East during next five days also. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Orissa, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

But most parts of the northwest (except the hilly regions) and central India (except east Madhya Pradesh) are likely to have subdued rains during the next week, the IMD said in its outlook.

NEXT `LOW'

Meanwhile, international models continued to suggest that another `low', a relatively stronger system, is likely to form over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh around September 20. This is seen as prompting the revival of monsoon flows across central and south peninsular India.

The system will move inland and drive rainfall except over parts of southern Tamil Nadu, and the wet weather is forecast to sustain right till the end of the month. On the west coast, areas up to north Konkan are likely to get affected. The strengthening flows are seen busying up things over South China Sea and the western Pacific as well.

According to projections by the US National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), the week beginning September 21 will witness monsoon engaging itself to top gear and will pound parts of the vulnerable west coast with up to 500 per cent above-normal-rainfall for the period.

Rayalaseema, Telengana, northern Tamil Nadu, Kerala, north interior Karnataka and adjoining Maharashtra are other regions expected to share the spoils by notching up varying amounts of rainfall above the normal.
