Meet to hear Bajaj Auto Akurdi issue
Alka Kshirsagar
Pune, Sept. 4
A meeting in Mumbai between the Maharashtra Labour Minister, Mr Ganesh Naik, and the various parties concerned over the closure of the Akurdi plant of Bajaj Auto Ltd is now being held in Pune and will be attended by the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar.
The meeting had been convened on the recommendation of the Deputy Labour Commissioner, Pune, Mr Anil Lakaswar, to find a resolution to the contentious issue of closure of production at Akurdi.
He had been approached by BAL’s two labour unions that feared that the ‘sit at home and get paid’ offer by the management would cause multiple problems for the workers and have a ripple effect in the adjoining industrial areas.
The meeting that was to be held at the Mantralya in Mumbai is now being held at the Circuit House in Pune, with both Mr Pawar and Mr Naik attending. With the BAL management blaming issues such as outdated labour laws, imposition of octroi and Government policy that made production uneconomical, Wednesday’s meeting will also be attended by the Pune Municipal Commissioner, Mr Pravin Pardeshi, members of BAL unions and management, Mr Lakaswar said.
