Infrastructure Industry & Economy - Economy Infrastructure growth slips to 5.3% in June

Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 17 A slowdown in the crude oil production, combined with a dip in coal, cement and finished steel output, dragged down the annual growth of the six key infrastructure industries to 5.3 per cent in June this year, compared to 7.7 per cent growth in output in June 2006, Government data showed on Friday. The six infrastructure industries had registered 8.7 per cent year-on-year growth in output in May 2007. The growth of the six infrastructure industries, which have a combined weight of 26.7 per cent in the index of industrial production (IIP), also slowed down to 6.9 per cent during the April-June quarter, against 7.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2006-07. With the exception of electricity sector, other segments – petroleum refinery products, coal, cement and finished steel – recorded a slowdown in growth during June this year. Electricity generation grew by 6.8 per cent (4.9 per cent). In absolute terms, 57,078.1 Gwh (gigawatt hours) were generated in June, compared to 53,450.6 Gwh earlier. During the first quarter of the fiscal, electricity generation was up 8.3 per cent at 1,75,930.2 Gwh against 5.3 per cent growth in the previous quarter. Crude oil production also saw 1.8 per cent dip in June, compared to growth of 1.2 per cent in June 2006. Growth in petroleum refinery output slowed to 9.8 per cent in June, down from the 10.5 per cent in June last year. However, for the first quarter, petroleum refinery production showed a rise of 13.2 per cent (11.9 per cent). During the first quarter, crude petroleum production declined by 0.7 per cent, compared to 0.2 per cent growth earlier. Coal production too was down, growing by just 1.3 per cent in June to 32.34 million tonnes against 11.8 per cent growth earlier. It grew by 0.7 per cent during the first quarter, compared to an increase of eight per cent. Cement production registered a growth of 5.6 per cent in June 2007, compared to 11.7 per cent in June 2006. It grew by 6.8 per cent during the first quarter, compared to increase of 10.2 per cent earlier. Finished steel production registered a growth of 5.6 per cent in June, compared to 10.2 per cent growth earlier. Cumulatively, during the first quarter, steel production grew by 7.7 per cent (10.3 per cent).
