Symantec’s new protection tool launch next month

Preethi J.

Bangalore, Aug. 9 Security vendor Symantec’s End Point Protection version 11.0 will be unveiled in September.

Codenamed Hamlet, this software was designed using customer feedback and protects servers, laptops, smartphones, and other end points in an enterprise’s network.

Its single view console gives the Chief Security Officer a holistic view of the status of the employees’ devices.

Cyber attack

Market data and information on latest attacks in the rest of the world are also presented in a simplified, graphical interface. “This will help him fix his firm’s security posture versus the threat landscape,” said Mr Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director, Symantec India.

According to a PricewaterhouseCoopers study, nearly one in three Indian organisations suffered some financial loss because of a cyber attack last year compared with one in five organisations worldwide and one in eight organisations in the US.

The software occupies only 21 MB of hard disk space, important in large public sector firms and government agencies, where computing infrastructure is minimal.

In response to competition, which has also followed the consolidation path, Mr Dhupar said: “Our competitors have fewer solutions, and none have all the pieces together yet. They offer modular solutions with no single view.”

A moving target is that much tougher to protect.

Info management

Information on employee’s laptop is travelling everywhere — to homes, other countries, over wireless networks and through USB ports to other devices. This has led the company to shift to the next gear — offering software that manages information and secures interactions.

The Indian network security market is now valued at $29.9 million, according to the PwC survey.

The largest number of targeted attacks have been on the following segments — financial services, manufacturing, transportation, media/entertainment, telecom, high-tech, power and energy, and so on.
