Hyderabad, Aug. 3

The University of Hyderabad has lined up several programmes for expansion, besides augmenting student intake.

By the end of the 11th Plan, the University would more than double student intake from 3,000 currently and introduce new and innovative programmes driven by social relevance and market dynamics, said Prof Seyed E. Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor, in his address at the 10th convocation.

“In the next five years, our effort will be to cast ourselves into a globally competitive University of excellence and create a new benchmark.”

The University recently initiated five-year masters programme, some for the first time in India, to train candidates in research-oriented disciplines.

“The integrated programme will soon have its own premises, new lecture complexes and laboratories.”

In the current academic year, two new schools of study – School of Medical Sciences and School of Engineering Sciences and Technology – have been added to the existing eight schools.

The University has also established some new centres for earth and space sciences, high energy materials, cognitive science, R&D in aging, health psychology, study of social exclusion and inclusive policy and culture and innovation studies, among others.

One of the objectives of the University, accredited with a five-star ranking by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), is to build upon an effective public-private partnerships in higher education.

The Institute of Life Sciences opened a few months back is a “wonderful” example of public-private partnership, he added.
