Big increase in e-filing of IT returns

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi, Aug. 2 Electronic filing of income-tax returns by the salaried class seems to have taken off in a big way going by the number of returns received by the tax department till July 31.

Although e-filing was optional this year (assessment year 2007-08) for salaried taxpayers, official sources said that the income-tax department received 1,46,453 returns from this category till July 31 through this mode.

“This is a very encouraging response. Increase in e-filing only shows there is better compliance of tax laws,” sources added.

It was pointed out that there cannot be a true comparison with the previous year as the e-return software was put in place only after July last year.

As part of its efforts to encourage better tax compliance, the Finance Ministry had recently launched a heavy media campaign urging taxpayers to utilise the option of e-filing of returns.

Last fiscal, the tax department received 3,25,000 e-returns, but the majority — nearly 3,16,000 — was related to corporate assesses, and less than 2,000 returns were filed by non-corporate assesses.

The Government had last year made e-filing of returns mandatory for corporate assesses.
