Automobiles Industry & Economy - Two/Three Wheelers Marketing - Trends Four-wheeler sales post double-digit growth in July
Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 1 In contrast to the anticipated sluggish sales during July due to the monsoon season, some four wheeler manufacturers have continued to record a double digit growth. Maruti Udyog Ltd registered 18.3 per cent growth in its sales at 52,839 units compared with 44,653 units during the same period last year. It also recorded a robust export growth of 188 per cent with sales at 5,070 units against 1,755 units last year. Capacity Constraints
With its newly launched SX4 witnessing strong demand, MUL registered highest growth in the A3 segment at 105 per cent, which also includes Esteem and Baleno at 4,394 units (2,142 units). Its A2 segment that includes Alto, Wagon R, Zen, Swift grew at 18.5 per cent at 34,737 units (29,326 units). While its C segment, which has Omni and Versa, grew marginally at 4.6 per cent at 7,214 units, sales of Maruti 800 declined marginally by 1.2 per cent at 5,970 units. “While the numbers show growth, the actual retail numbers is lower compared with the reported wholesale figures. This has resulted in high stock level with the dealers,” said Mr Rajan Pental, Senior Vice-President, Auto Loans, HDFC Bank. With export back log orders and production capacity constraints, Hyundai Motors India Ltd recorded a 7.4 per cent decline in sales in the domestic market at 15,003 units (16,209 units). However, it reported a 57 per cent growth in exports at 13,200 units (8,406 units). On the back of increasing sales of Spark, General Motors recorded 87 per cent growth with sales at 4,570 units as against 2,450 units sold during the same month of the previous year. Offering Discounts
With competition growing intense and declining sales of City and Civic, premium car maker Honda Siel Cars India sales for July declined by 17 per cent with sales at 4,533 units(5,461 units). “SX4 has eaten in to the share of Honda City,” said an auto industry source. He further said that the sales for July has shown growth due to many manufacturers offering quantity discounts, which has lured dealers into buying more stock. However, the two wheeler industry continues to show a slump with the impact of interest rates and monsoon. Hero Honda Motors Ltd sold 2,01,191 units in July as against 2,35,314 units sold last year, reporting a fall of 14.50 per cent. Bajaj saw a 6 per cent decline in sales at 1,62,801 units (1,73,158 units), while its motorcycles sales fell by 7 per cent.
