Nicholas Piramal gets US nod for cancer compound

Mumbai, July 27

Drug-maker Nicholas Piramal India Ltd has received regulatory approval in the US for its Investigational New Drug IND-P276, its lead cancer compound to treat Multiple Myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Clinical trials, during which the prospective drug is tested on humans, will start at Harvard University's Dana Farber Cancer Institute, the company told the BSE. Two additional sites - St. Vincent's Hospital, New York and Emory University Medical Center in Atlanta will also participate in this study.

Stating that the US Food and Drug Administration has approved the IND application, the company said that it’s a first from India in the cancer segment.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematologic malignancy, responsible for at least 2 per cent of cancer-related deaths.
