Rishad Premji joins Wipro

The 30-year-old Rishad Premji, eldest son of the Wipro Chairman, Mr Azim Premji, joined the company on Wednesday after the shareholders approved his appointment at the annual general meeting.

“Yes, he (Rishad) joined the company on Wednesday as our new employee. He has been appointed in our flagship global IT services and products division,” said Mr Azim Premji, replying to a query at a press conference.

When asked whether Mr Rishad’s appointment was part of his succession plan for the company, Mr Premji said: “All I can say is Rishad is our new employee and will work in the IT division, reporting to Mr Girish S. Paranjpe, President of Financial Services.

MBA from Harvard

Mr Paranjpe said Mr Rishad is like any other new employee for us and has been absorbed in a lateral position.

He will undergo induction over the next two months and will be based in Bangalore.

An MBA from Harvard Business School, Mr Rishad Premji, had worked briefly with a few companies including General Electric in the US and Bain Consulting in the UK, where he was business development executive, handling financial and other allied services.

As of June 30, 2007, he held 6,18,000 shares of Wipro, amounting to about 0.04 per cent of the company’s equity.

Mr Premji’s younger son, Mr Tariq Premji, is working with Azim Premji Investments.
