Rupee gains on dollar inflows


Mumbai, July 13

The rupee appreciated by eight paise against the greenback on sustained dollar inflows. The domestic currency opened at 40.48/50 and strengthened through the day to close at 40.42, against the previous close of 40.50. “The rupee made up for Thursday’s losses as there were strong dollar inflows. The central bank did try and intervene to prevent the appreciation but the rupee managed to stay firm,” said a dealer at a private bank. Market participants said t hat despite the RBI’s intervention, the rupee was likely to steadily appreciate next week. Globally, traders said the dollar has been weakening against all the other major currencies. In forwards, the six-month premium closed at 1.91 per cent (2.09 per cent) and the 12-month ended at 1.93 per cent (2.02 per cent). —
