Railways’ earnings growth slows down in first quarter

New Delhi, July 11 The first quarter performance of Indian Railways has slowed down owing to lesser loadings in April and June.

While April loadings slowed due to lower loadings of commodities including cement, fertiliser and coal, the June goods loadings were affected due to the agitation launched by the Gujjar community in Rajasthan because of which several goods trains were stabled and disruptions on the Kottavalasa-Kirandul (KK) Line (one of the key iron ore moving routes).

In the first quarter of 2007-08, railways freight revenues recorded a 9.95 per cent growth to Rs 11,025.44 crore from Rs 10,028.11 crore, said an official release. This is much lower compared with the 15.9 per cent annual growth recorded for its goods earnings in the first quarter of 2006-07.

The total earnings during April 1-June 30, 2007 went up by 10.75 per cent touching Rs 16,535.97 crore against Rs 14,930.26 crore during the same period last year.

However, in the first quarter of 2006-07, the total earnings had gone up by 14.22 per cent on an annual basis.

The growth rate of passenger earnings has, however, marked an increase.

The total passenger revenue earnings during the first three months of the financial year 2007-08 were Rs 4,857.52 crore, up 11.65 per cent, compared with Rs 4,350.67 crore last year.

In the first quarter of 2006-07, passenger revenues registered an annual growth of 9.25 per cent.

Passenger bookings

The total approximate number of passengers booked during the period were 1,648.34 million compared with 1,576.08 million last year, showing an increase of 4.58 per cent.

During April-June, the revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 472.44 crore, up 17.76 per cent, against Rs 401.18 crore last year.

The total sundry earnings have gone up by 20.14 per cent to Rs 180.57 crore (Rs 150.3 crore in April-June 2006).
