Hardware Industry & Economy - Non-conventional Energy Moser Baer looking for expansion in photovoltaics Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee
The global photovoltaic market is on a high growth curve - sales are expected to grow over six times to $40 billion by 2010.
MR RAVI KHANNA
New Delhi June 24 Even as solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing `hots up' in India with global players eyeing it as a production hub, Moser Baer is scripting the next chapter of a massive capacity ramp-up in the country. Moser Baer Photo Voltaic Ltd is in talks with two-three States including Tamil Nadu for a post-2008 expansion blueprint that would entail an additional investment outlay of Rs 2,000 crore at a new site. A source said the company would finalise the new site shortly. "Any large player in the field has to look at 750MW-1GW capacity positioning. While the company's existing manufacturing location in Greater Noida envisages 400 MW-plus of capacity plans, it has to look at an additional site for capacity expansion beyond that level," the source said. The photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into energy. MBPV manufactures solar cells and modules by straddling multiple technologies including crystalline silicon, concentration, nano-technology and thin films. The existing manufacturing facilities are housed in a renewable energy SEZ at Greater Noida. Mr Ravi Khanna, CEO, Moser Baer Photo Voltaic Ltd, refused to divulge expansion details but said the company was evaluating potential manufacturing sites on parameters such as logistics (proximity to ports), manpower, and State Government incentives. "We could also look at acquiring additional land in Greater Noida itself, although there are risk mitigation issues to be considered. The capital outlay (for the new site) is likely to be accentuated," he said. The global photovoltaic market is on a high growth curve - sales are expected to grow over six times to $40 billion by 2010. MBPV, last month, commenced commercial shipment of solar photovoltaic cells. MBPV also said it has firm customer orders and memorandum of understanding exceeding $100 million. MBPV had recently announced the completion of the first phase of its 80 MW silicon crystalline project (40 MW is up and running), and expects the second phase of Greater Noida project to be commissioned early next year. Also, the company has commenced freezing technical specifications for the next-generation 100 MW capacity planned for financial year `09 at the same site.
