Dairy & Dairy Products Marketing - New Products & Services Industry & Economy - Health Utterly healthy, says Amul Debdatta Das
New Delhi June 19 Bid those guilt pangs goodbye, for Amul claims to be heralding a whole new portfolio of health and wellness products that are apt even for diabetics and weight watchers. Be it ice candies, frozen desert, chocolates or the soon to be launched lassi, Amul has given them the proverbial fitness credentials. So you have sugar-free ice-creams and chocolates, probiotic lassi, and fortified fitness candies with benefits ranging from improving immunity and digestion, building stronger bones, to allowing diabetic patients the joy of a sweet tooth without altering insulin levels.
Fitness candies
Amul has just launched its range of fitness candies, Stamina, in two flavours, thereby completing its health range under the ice-cream category. "Traditionally ice candies are consumed to quench one's thirst, without any added benefits. Stamina contains carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to help in the maintenance and growth of the body and keep active throughout the day," said Mr R.S. Sodhi, General Manager, Marketing, Amul. The company has priced its candies at Rs 8 for a 60 ml pack, and is targeting kids, youth and health conscious adults. Amul, in January, had also launched a probiotic (Amul Prolife) and sugar free (Amul Sugarfree) range of ice-cream deserts. It is now in the process of testing its probiotic lassi in Ahmedabad. "We will gradually roll it out in other markets, since its shelf life will be only two-three days," said Mr Sodhi. "Health is the buzz word, even in business. It's a niche segment and we don't expect to sell large volumes. Our projection is that within the next three years, health products will be 10 per cent of their respective categories," Mr Sodhi said.
