Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 15

Aurobindo Pharma Ltd has announced that it has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for Trandolapril tablets of strength 1 mg, 2 mg & 4 mg. Trandolapril is the generic equivalent of Abbott's Mavik tablets, indicated for the treatment of hypertension. This is the company's fourth anti hypertensive (medicines regulating blood pressure) getting the USFDA's nod.

According to a company release, Trandolapril is an ACE inhibitor, and amongst the class, has a longer half-life. Hence it is dosed once a day. Trandolapril is also employed in combination with diuretics or other calcium channel blockers due to its beneficial synergy. The drug is a better choice in diabetic hypertensives as it helps in slowing down the onset of nephropathy besides regulating blood pressure. Trandolopril tablets enjoy a market share of around $50 million currently in the US alone.
