Announcements Optra Systems launches Centre of Excellence Our Bureau
The centre was looking at partnering with instrumentation vendors, third party application providers and system integrators, contract researchers and pharma and biotech companies.
Pune June 15 Pune-based Optra Systems Pvt Ltd has announced the launch of its Centre of Excellence in Biomedical Image Informatics. Talking to presspersons, Mr Abhi Gholap, President and Chief Executive Officer of Optra Systems, said the centre would have a modern infrastructure for biomedical, image analysis, pattern matching, artificial intelligence and expert systems for healthcare, life science, drug discovery and research, clinical trials and patient care. He said about $0.25 million has been utilised for the setting up of the centre and noted that about 20 personnel would be on the rolls. The number would be increased to 75 by the end of the current calendar year.
Academic Research
Looking at the industry, he said in the drug discovery and development segment, about 70 per cent of the data was in the form of images and about $2.3 billion was spent each year on academic research in the US alone. About $1.8 billion is spent per new chemical entity by every pharma and biotech company, he said pointing out that each imaging instrument costs ranged between $1 lakh and $10 lakh. Mr Abhi noted that in the healthcare segment, patient care demanded visualisation and analysis of disease conditions, increased emphasis on accurate device identification and measurement and software required to perform the variety of functions. He said the centre was looking at partnering with instrumentation vendors, third party application providers and system integrators, contract researchers and pharma and biotech companies.
Development Centres
Mr Abhi noted that it has already begun its work with Stanford University and Zeiss Microscopy Imaging. It is also doing research for European companies. It would be setting up offshore development centres for these clients and would add on the personnel as and when the work came in. Looking at the financials, Mr Abhi said about 45 per cent of the revenues would come in from the drug discovery and development segment, while the remaining would be from the healthcare.
