Our Bureau

`Unit shipments grew 15.9% in Jan-March quarter'

New Delhi June 14 With the year witnessing all-round economic growth, the total installed base of personal computers (PCs) in India has crossed 22 million during 2006-07. This in turn translates into a PC for every 50 Indians.

The India client PC market witnessed a 20 per cent year-on-year growth in unit shipments during FY 07, according to data released by IDC.

"In the overall PC market (notebooks and desktops combined), the rankings remained unchanged, with HP retaining the top spot with a market share of 21.2 per cent, followed by HCL at 13.5 per cent, and Lenovo at 9.5 per cent, in terms of unit shipments during FY 07. In terms of total desktop shipments, HP narrowly led the market, followed by HCL and Lenovo in second and third spots during FY 07," IDC said in a statement.

IDC said that in the commercial desktop PC shipments, HCL led the market in FY 07 followed by HP and Lenovo. On the other hand, in terms of consumer desktop PC shipments, HP led the market in FY 07 followed by HCL and Zenith.

In the Notebook category, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 39.6 per cent in FY 07 in unit shipment terms, said IDC. Lenovo came in at the second spot with 17.6 per cent market share and Toshiba climbed up to take the third spot replacing Dell. For the quarter January-March, HCL outpaced Toshiba and Dell to grab the third spot, it added.

During the January-March quarter, the overall PC market grew 15.9 per cent over the corresponding period previous year in unit shipments. For the same period, the desktop PC shipments showed a growth of 6.3 per cent, while notebook PC shipments showed a growth of 73.1 per cent. "The country has one PC for every 50 Indians today. This represents a watershed era in the history of the Indian PC market. Post-liberalisation blues have given way to a robust economy that is fuelling increasing spends on IT infrastructure by corporates and Government, and on PCs by the home and Education segments," said Mr Kapil Dev Singh, Country Manager, IDC India.
