Bauxite mining in Vizag dist opposed

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam June 13 All opposition parties in the State - the two left parties, the BJP and the Telugu Desam - have condemned the proposal of the State Government to undertake bauxite mining in the agency tracts of Visakhapatnam district through the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation to supply raw material to the Jindal refinery planned in Vizianagaram district.

Drawing the attention of the State Government to the overwhelming opposition to the proposed alumina refinery in Vizinagaram district, at a public hearing last week, they said that the State Government should give up the move in deference to the public opinion failing which they would launch an agitation.

Mr G. Srinivasa Rao, TDP leader, said that concerted efforts would be made by all parties to bring together people from the plains as well as the agency areas to oppose the Government move.

A public interest petition would be filed soon, he added.

He wanted the State Government to answer questions raised by experts with regard to environmental pollution likely to be caused by bauxite mining and other related issues.

Mr J. Pridhvi Raj of the BJP accused the Congress of adopting double standards on the issue.

The party, he said, was opposing bauxite mining in Orissa and supporting it in Andhra Pradesh.

Mr G. Demudu, the MLA from Chintapalli, accused Commercial Taxes Minister Mr K. Ramakrishna of not keeping his word on convening an all-party meeting on the issue.

Mr J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, CPI leader, and several CPI(M) leaders also condemned the move of the Government.
