Indian opportunities `exciting' for Agilent

Mr William P. Sullivan

Bangalore June 10 From wireless mobility (WiMax) to micro-RNA, measurement company Agilent Technologies is ready to take on opportunities.

Talking about the potential of India, Mr William P. Sullivan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Agilent, said: "India is the fastest growing country in opportunity for Agilent. We want to capitalise on many years of above world-growth rates."

He was speaking at the sidelines of the company's Technology Day, a forum for experts in electronic measurements and life sciences.

India's growing life sciences, aerospace, defence, communication (both infrastructure and new cell phone manufacturing), contract research and manufacturing industries are "exciting", according to Mr Sullivan.

While the pharmaceutical industry is still dominated by US and Europe, the opportunity in India is large, with its population base and unique diseases that have to be treated cost-effectively, he said.

He predicted that life sciences efforts in the country for agriculture — in terms of food safety — would also increase. There will also be more regulations on food and drug safety.

The $5 billion firm will continue its spree of acquisitions. It has acquired 14 in the last two years. "We will look for companies that either fill a tech gap or go into adjacent market opportunity, to supplement internal growth," said Mr Sullivan.

The company's largest hiring activity is in Asia. It employs over 1,400 in India at Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

It employs 19,000 worldwide.
