Assocham has urged the Government to set up exclusive export promotion zones (EPZs) to push exports of herbal material and medicines from the current level of about Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 12,000 crore by 2012.
A paper, brought out by the chamber on herbal exports, says that India followed by China is the largest producer of medicinal plants. States that are major producers of herbal plants having the highest medicinal value include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra and also the Himalayan range.
These States together account for over 75 per cent of export proceeds of herbal medicines out of the country's estimated exports of Rs 3,000 crore. If EPZs with facilities for research and development were set up, it would not be difficult for India to accelerate exports to the projected level of Rs 12,000 crore in the next five years.
This will be particularly so because in the identified countries, the need for herbal medicines has been rising due to their quality ingredients, availability factor and price competitiveness with virtually little side effects.
Second, these herbs and medicines meet the World Health Organisation prescribed standards and thus face no restrictions in the overseas markets, according to the chamber. The paper also highlights that the country has 15 agro-climatic zones, 4,700 different plant species and 15,000 medicinal plants.
