Alongside, the Government will begin groundwork for a greenfield airport. It estimates that 4,820 acres will be required for the second airport, which is expected to come up in the Sriperumbudur-Tiruvallur taluks. This was announced today by the State Government after the conclusion of an all-party meeting held for discussing the airport expansion project proposal. The Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, told newspersons that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) would be entrusted with the job of airport expansion, as also the second airport. Land acquisition for the airport expansion project will cost about Rs 1,000 crore, he said. The AAI would spend another Rs 1,000 crore on the project. He said that only 947 houses will be affected by the project - families living in them will be paid due compensation. Reacting to the announcement, Mr Gopal Srinivasan, Chairman (Tamil Nadu State Council), CII, said that this was just what CII had been asking for. "Only two weeks ago we made an appeal for urgent expansion of the existing airport and commencement of work for a new airport," he told Business Line today, calling the announcement a "very positive step."
