Non-conventional Energy States - Andhra Pradesh Experts debate use of veg oil as bio-fuel Our Bureau
Hyderabad May 14 Scientists, experts and policy makers have called for serious discussion on effective and optimum utilisation of vegetable oils to attend to the power and bio-fuel needs of the country. A two-day national seminar on the `role of vegetable oils as a source of energy for decentralised applications' organised at Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) here on Monday held discussions on how to go about using vegetable oils. "There are some complex issues involved in this - whether to use it for power or us it as bio-fuel," Mr Subhash Pani, Union Secretary (Rural Development), said. Delivering the keynote address, he said there was a need to take a lifecycle approach with regard to taking up bio-diesel plantation right from the seed to application. Dr M.V. Rao, a senior agricultural scientist and Chairman of AP Netherlands Biotechnology Project, said it was important to take up plantations on a commercial scale.
DEBATE ON MILLETS
Responding to a suggestion by Mr V.S. Sampath, Director-General, National Institute of Rural Development, who preferred to replace the "low-value millet crops" to crops such as jatropha, Dr Rao said millets were crucial to meeting the nutrition needs of the people. Stating that millets were grown in 25 million hectares in the country, Mr Sampath said they gave a yield of just 700 kg a hectare. Jatropha would give four to five times more than that, he said. He also said that the country could convert 30 million hectares of wasteland into bio-diesel plantations.
