GMDC applies for J&K mining rights

Virendra Pandit

Ahmedabad May 9 Doda in Jammu and Kashmir may well find itself soon on the global map of precious stones if Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) succeeds in mining sapphire there.

The Jammu and Kashmir Government had recently floated inquiries for mining rights and GMDC is one of the major applicants expressing interest. Confirming this, the GMDC Chairman and Managing Director, Mr C.J. Jose, told Business Line here that the corporation had applied for it last month and was awaiting a response from the J&K government. He said GMDC's hopes stemmed from the fact that it had a long experience and the required knowhow for the job, unlike some other applicants. It was not, however, possible to say anything further as the issue was at a preliminary stage.
