State Govt sets up Disaster Management Authority

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram May 9 The Kerala Government has constituted a Disaster Management Authority as per a legislation passed by the Union Government.

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, inaugurated the authority, the first of its kind in the country, here on May 9.

The Chief Minister said that a disaster management training centre of international standard would be set up under the authority in the State.

He said that Kerala was one of the States facing the threat of natural disasters. Instead of taking up relief measures after the disaster had struck, activities to minimise the after effects should be initiated before hand in disaster-prone areas. The Disaster Management Authority was a scientific set-up to ensure it, he said.

The authority will identify disaster-prone areas and formulate programmes to combat the threat. There will be district-level authorities under the State authority, which will be chaired by the Chief Minister.

Mr Achuthanandan said that a project would be designed to link up all the schools in the State that have Edusat satellite arrangement to spread awareness about disaster management. Besides, in order to create a communication network for disseminating information about disasters, a system would be put in place to collect the names and addresses of Ham radio operators in the State, he said.

The Revenue Minister, Mr K.P. Rajendran, who is the Vice-chairman of the authority, said the authority would facilitate integration of relief activities of police, fire force and the revenue authorities to ensure that assistance was provided to the affected at the earliest.
