NEW LAUNCH: Mr S.P. Shukla, President, Personal Business, Reliance Communications, displaying the Classic handsets at prices starting from Rs 777 in Mumbai on Wednesday. - Paul Noronha
Mumbai May 2 Reliance Communications on Wednesday introduced a range of mobile handsets priced at between Rs 777 and Rs 888, shaving by half to one-third the existing entry level mobility costs in the country. Currently, the cheapest entry level GSM phone costs around Rs 1,500, while the cost of the cheapest CDMA phone could be a couple of thousands lower depending on the bundled offer (handset plus service) available from various service providers. RCom, like other operators in the CDMA space, would be offering its low-priced range at a discount to its actual price, but since its services are tied to the handset, the costs would be recovered from the customer over a period of time. The `Classic' range of handsets introduced by Rcom will extend the benefits of mobility to an entirely new segment of population in metros, small cities as well as the rural hinterland of India, said Mr S.P. Shukla, President, Personal Business, Reliance Communications, at a news conference here on Wednesday. The new range is also aimed at the replacement market, which consists of first-time cellular subscribers who buy a second-hand phone, he said. Rcom will be spending Rs 10,000 crore in capital expenditure during the current fiscal, Mr Anil Ambani, Chairman of the company had said on Monday. The company will connect every town and village in India with a population of more than 5,000, he had said.
